About this Event

We are looking forward to learning more about Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy in Eating Disorders with our very own Dr. Amanda Downey and Dr. Marissa Raymond-Flesch.

Eating Disorders & Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: Synergies & Urgently Needed Investigations with Amanda Downey, MD and Marissa Raymond-Flesch, MD, MPH

Description:

This talk will introduce the possible applications of psychedelic-assisted therapy for adolescents and young adults with eating disorders. It will include (1) a brief review of the epidemiology of eating disorders in adolescents and young adults, including the need for novel treatments; (2) describe the neurobiological underpinnings of anorexia nervosa and how psilocybin therapy may work synergistically to influence those factors which perpetuate anorexia nervosa and (3) illustrate key elements of a clinical trial of psilocybin therapy, including opportunities for stakeholder engagement.

About the Presenters:

Amanda Downey is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. She is a pediatrician and a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who cares for adolescents and young adults with eating disorders. She works with patients and their families to develop a treatment plan that honors their unique strengths and challenges. Through education, advocacy, and research, she strives to dismantle the systems that increase risk for eating disorders and improve evidence-based eating disorder treatments. She is the principal investigator on the Ketamine Effects on Learning In Eating Disorders Study.

Marissa Raymond-Flesch, MD, MPH, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy within UCSF's Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine. Her research program incorporates stakeholder engagement across all of her studies and spans clinical trials and health services investigations to improve adolescent and young adult access to evidence-based mental and reproductive health care. She is currently the principal investigator of two clinical trials testing new pharmacotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of eating disorders, including the Study of Psilocybin for Anorexia Nervosa in Young Adults.
