Staring Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Peter Lawford
Experience what has been billed as ‘The Happiest Musical Ever Made’, back on The Strand’s giant screen in true digital HD and 39 speaker surround-sound!
A nightclub performer hires a naive chorus girl to become his new dance partner to make his former partner jealous and to prove he can make any partner a star.
MEDIC! Gene Kelly was cast as Don, but broke his ankle playing volleyball in his backyard. He suggested that he be replaced by Fred Astaire. Cyd Charisse was up for the role of Nadine, but a torn ligament in either one or both of her knees forced her to drop out. She was replaced by Ann Miller.
The shedding feathered gown worn by Judy Garland when she dances with Fred Astaire in one number is an inside joke reference to Ginger Rogers’ problematic gown dancing with Astaire in Top Hat (1935). An ostrich feather broke loose from Rogers’ elaborate gown and stubbornly floated in mid-air around Astaire’s face.
The song “Easter Parade”, which inspired the movie, was first sung in Irving Berlin’s 1933 Broadway revue As Thousands Cheer by Marilyn Miller and Clifton Webb. It was inspired by the annual event in New York City where people stroll down Fifth Avenue, displaying their new hats (some very outrageous) and their Easter finery. The song also appeared in the Irving Berlin movie Holiday Inn (1942).
