Three popular library events – the Adult Spelling Bee and the monthly cooking and cocktail demonstration – will be held at both the East Bank Regional Library and the West Bank Regional Library in July as part of the Summer Reading Program.The East Bank event will occur at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
The West Bank event will occur at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 24 at the Jane O’Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.
Each event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail demonstration. Elizabeth Pearce, a New Orleans mixologist who owns Drink and Learn, which focuses on cocktail demonstrations and the city’s rich history of imbibing, will prepare a little known cocktail called the Bee’s Knees.
Chef Nora Wetzel will prepare honeycomb candy, also known as sponge toffee, cinder toffee, or the hokey pokey. It is a sweet, crunchy confection with honeycomb-like bubbles.
Adults 18 years of age and older may participate in the Spelling Bee. The event is free of charge and is open to the public. The Jefferson Parish Library’s Adult Spelling Bee is a contest in which individual competitors are eliminated as they fail to spell a given word correctly.
Registration is not required. Participants should simply arrive at the event on the day it is held. The purpose of the Adult Spelling Bee is to promote good spelling and good spelling habits, expand vocabulary and encourage accurate word usage and pronunciation.
The library’s first adult spelling bee, held in August 2013 at the East Bank Regional Library, featured almost 20 competitors and has grown steadily since.
