About this Event
On October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. a devastating 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in Northern California. This quake was responsible for more that 3,700 injuries and 63 deaths. When will the next big earthquake strike the Bay Area? Are you prepared?
In recognition of the anniversary of the Loma Prieta quake, the Pacifica Police Department and Pacifica Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) offer this 90-minute in person class on Thursday, October 19 focusing on what you can do to prepare yourself and your family for the next major earthquake. The same preparedness strategies are also applicable to other types of disasters such as powerful winter storms and wildfires. Attendees will receive a basic first aid kit at the end of class.
Following a major earthquake or other disaster, emergency services may be overwhelmed. Personal preparedness is critical. Emergency preparedness experts encourage everyone to be prepared to care for themselves for at least 72 hours following a major disaster or earthquake before assistance will be available. Is your family prepared? Are you registered for earthquake alerts? Are you registered for SMC Alert to receive local information following a disaster? Do you live in a tsunami hazard area? Do you have sufficient supplies? Do you have a plan? This class will help you answer these important questions.
Topics covered will include: Earthquake Early Warning Alerts - Community Emergency Notification Systems - Having a Family Plan - Supply Storage - First Aid - Drop, Cover & Hold - Away-from-home Kit - Cash & Documents - Camping Out - Water & Food - Focus on Children - Learn not to burn
Parking is limited, carpooling is encouraged. Register now to reserve your seat!
