A reading and presentation evening for the celebration of Passover and Theo Ellsworth's newer release with Dara Horn, One Little Goat. In collaboration with Har Shalom, Rabbi Scott Segal will be giving a presentation about Passover while Theo walks us through his illustrating journey for this young adult graphic novel.
About the Book: Three-time National Jewish Book Award-winning author Dara Horn (People Love Dead Jews)’s first book for young readers, One Little Goat is a quirky, dryly funny, Passover-themed graphic novel featuring a lost matzah, a never-ending seder and a time-traveling talking goat. A delightfully bizarre exploration of the meaning of Passover, One Little Goat is layered with joy, humor, and magic that flows from generation to generation. At the Passover seder, an out-of-control family cannot find their afikoman — the hidden matzah required for the seder’s ending — and as a result, they are trapped at a seder that cannot end. Six months in, a wisecracking talking goat shows up at their door with bad news: Thousands of years of previous seders have accumulated underneath their seder, and their afikoman is stuck in one of them. Now the family’s “wise child” must travel down with the goat through centuries of previous Passovers to find it– and to discover the questions he needs to start asking.
About the Illustrator: Theo Ellsworth is a self-taught artist and comics creator best known for his graphic novels Capacity and Sleeper Car. In 2010, he was a recipient of the Best Art Vinyl award for the Flying Lotus EP Pattern+Grid World. He lives with his wife and son in Missoula, Montana.
About Har Shalom: For more than six decades, our Missoula community has been a hub for Jewish holiday celebrations, religious education, services, and community service projects. Located in Missoula, Montana, we are an inclusive and egalitarian congregation affiliated with Reform Judaism. Har Shalom proudly supports a growing, joyful Western Montana Jewish community and warmly welcomes Jews of all backgrounds, interfaith couples, and those eager to explore Jewish life.
About Rabbi Scott Segal: Rabbi Scott was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. After going to college at Indiana University, spending time first in Israel and then the Bay Area, he returned to Cincinnati to study at Hebrew Union College. While at HUC he earned an M.A in Jewish Law and Ethics as well as his Smicha (Rabbinic Ordination). During that time he met his wife Rabbi Emily Segal. Since being ordained in 2010 he has served in a variety of rabbinic and educational roles in Chicago, Michigan, Colorado, and Arizona, but his primary job throughout has been to be Abba (dad) to his two amazing kids Samantha (12) and Ezra (9). His current furry companions are two mischievous Golden Retrievers named Nugget and Obie. Aside from his rabbi-ing and parenting he is a music nut, plays drums and guitar. He also enjoys weightlifting, basketball, ultimate frisbee, hiking, jiu-jitsu, skiing, juggling, and reading.
