Check out birding hotspots at South Lake Whatcom and along the Nooksack River. We’ll be going to three sites for eagle watching where most years (depending on river flow) there are numerous eagles. We will also likely see mergansers, buffleheads, goldeneyes, herons, kingfishers, dippers and other interesting birds. At our stop at a fish hatchery we’ll watch salmon spawning and see dippers diving for their eggs. Short walks involve minimal distances and are on level ground. Our trip ends with an optional group lunch (bring your own lunch!) in the warmth of the Deming Library meeting room. Dress warmly and bring rain gear just in case!
We’ll meet at the Sunset Drive Safeway parking lot near Taco Bell and carpool from there. Parking at most of these birding sites is limited so if you are willing to be a carpool driver let us know. Field trip leaders are locals who volunteer at the Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center and have led this trip for the past 6 years: Dorrie Jordan, retired veterinarian; Steve Glenn PhD, retired ecology/bird biology professor at SVCC; and Chris Brewer, retired Whatcom Museum educator and previous Audubon board member.
Please provide an email address or phone number at registration so we can provide additional information.
