About EnCanto
The musical work of this Bay Area's Latin American duet reflects the multicultural and inclusive world in which they work as musicians and members of the rich cultura latina. In this context, the duet becomes part of a great cultural engine that teaches, interprets, and defends the beautiful and profound social and cultural expressions. This engine is ignited every day and is reflected in all branches of art, from the fantastic murals, music, and percussion, to the poetry collections and literary expressions that abound in our community.
Today, as we are under attack from harshly pernicious forces, we are more than proud to present art and joy; resilience and culture. We are proudly part of this, our beautiful mundo latino. Ours is a multicultural experience that stretches from Chile to Puerto Rico and beyond. How iguales we Latin Americans are. From a zampoña to an intricate plena step, everything vibrates with the joy of being who we are and defending what we have with fierce strength. Thus, EnCanto is our grain of sand in this difficult fight.
About Made y Feña
Madelina Zayas (Made), born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a vocalist, choreographer, and architect who has performed in Puerto Rico and the USA since 1985. She is the founder and lead singer of the quartet Sudamericanto. Her music career started in the Bay Area singing Caribbean Nueva Trova music.
Fernando Torres (Feña) is a poet and author who was arrested by the Chilean military dictatorship in 1975. He was expelled from the country and went to the US as a refugee exile in 1977. He was a founding member of the South American music ensemble Grupo Raiz.
We would like to thank La Peña Cultural Center, our home, and all our friends who have helped us with this recording—excellent musicians and great contributors to the cultural life of the Bay Area, but above all, excellent human beings. Thank you all so much.
