Make your own mini-ofrenda at the library!
About this Event

Join artist and educator Roxana Rivera and NAMI Glendale at the Edendale Library on Saturday, November 2nd to appreciate the lives of the people who matter most to you. Día de los Muertos is a time to appreciate the special qualities of someone who is no longer with us, their habits, comforts and unique qualities that they brought to this world. When we honor the dead together, we honor not just those who have passed on, but also this river of life that we all share.

Roxana will guide us in crafting mini-ofrendas for people who have meant something to us and are no longer with us, whether it’s your grandfather who fished at the pier mostly catching sardines, or your best friend who loved to barbeque, or even a well-known athlete, musician or public figure who influenced you in a positive way. Think about their habits, special traits and the things they loved and what they represented to you. What food and drink did they love? What clothes did they wear? What was their favorite color, sports team or song lyrics? What brought them comfort that would welcome them into this ofrenda?

OPTIONAL TO BRING:

  1. A photo, symbol or other visual that would represent the person you are honoring.
  2. An item representing something they loved (something small enough to fit into a mini-ofrenda, from the size of a shoebox down to the size of an Altoid tin), for example a tiny soda bottle or a picture of the Dodgers logo. We will also provide plenty of little images to choose from, and crafting materials, so this is optional.

Roxana Rivera is an artist, actor and entrepreneur, originally from Puebla, Mexico. She has worked as a radio announcer and has performed in TV shows, commercials, and in numerous theatrical productions around Mexico, including at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. She has taught art in schools and currently promotes arts for mental health through community workshops. Roxana is a mental health advocate who leads mental health programming, including NAMI Compartiendo Esperanza community conversations. She immigrated to California in 1985, and lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

This program will be bilingual, in English and in Spanish.

The Edendale library address is 2011 Sunset Blvd., but enter from the Alvarado St. side through the library parking lot. Email [email protected] for more information.
