Laboratorium im. Richarda Pipesa Instytutu Studiów Politycznych PAN zaprasza na dyskusję z Aleksandrem Etkindem wokół jego książki „Rosja kontra nowoczesność” (Warszawa 2024, Wyd. Krytyki Politycznej). Pretekstem do rozważań podjętych w eseju była dla Autora rosyjska agresja na Ukrainę. Jednak Etkind przedstawia przede wszystkim pogłębioną refleksję nad starciem Rosji i reżimu Władimira Putina z nowoczesnością. Celem Putina jest bowiem nie tylko tożsamość Ukrainy, ale idee świadomości klimatycznej i zmiany energetycznej. Etkind podejmuje się szczegółowej analizy poszczególnych technologii władzy – polityce nierówności, homofobii, korupcji, gospodarki surowcowej wskazując, że jak struktura reżimu walcząc z nowoczesnością zagraża światowemu porządkowi czasów antropocenu i kryzysu klimatycznego.

Dyskusja będzie prowadzona w języku angielskim i transmitowana na żywo na kanale YouTube ISP PAN.

Notka biograficzna: Aleksander Etkind jest historykiem i kulturoznawcą. Wykładowca Uniwersytetu Środkowoeuropejskiego w Wiedniu, wcześniej związany z Europejskim Instytutem Uniwersyteckim we Florencji, Uniwersytetem Cambridge i Uniwersytetem Europejskim w Sankt Petersburgu. Jego aktualne zainteresowania badawcze obejmują zagadnienie antropocenu, dekarbonizacji i bezpieczeństwa w Europie Wschodniej. W przeszłości zajmował się również studiami nad pamięcią, europejską historią intelektualną, imperiami i dekolonizacją oraz różnymi aspektami rosyjskiej historii. Jest autorem książek “Eros of the Impossible. The History of Psychoanalysis in Russia” (Westview Press 1996); “Internal Colonization: Russia’s Imperial Experience” (Polity Press 2011); “Warped Mourning: Stories of the Undead in the Land of the Unburied” (Stanford University Press 2013); “Roads not Taken. An Intellectual Biography of William C. Bullitt” (Pittsburgh University Press 2017); and “Nature’s Evil: A Cultural History of Natural Resources” (Polity Press 2021).

The Richard Pipes Laboratory of the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences invites you to a discussion with Alexander Etkind about his book Russia Against Modernity (Warsaw 2024, Krytyka Polityczna Publishing House). The pretext for the reflections undertaken in the essay was, for the Author, the Russian aggression against Ukraine. However, Etkind primarily presents an in-depth reflection on the clash between Russia and Vladimir Putin's regime and modernity. Putin's target is not only Ukraine's identity but also the ideas of climate awareness and energy change. Etkind undertakes a detailed analysis of the various technologies of power - the politics of inequality, homophobia, corruption, and the resource economy - pointing out how the regime's structure in fighting modernity threatens the global order of the Anthropocene era and the climate crisis.
The discussion will be held in English and streamed live on the ISP PAN YouTube channel.

Alexander Etkind is a historian and cultural scientist. He previously taught at the European University Institute at Florence, the University of Cambridge, and the European University at St Petersburg. His current interests are the political aspects of the Anthropocene, global decarbonization, and security in Eastern Europe. He was also involved in memory studies, European intellectual history, empires and decolonization, and various aspects of Russian history. He is the author of Eros of the Impossible. The History of Psychoanalysis in Russia (Westview Press 1996); Internal Colonization: Russia’s Imperial Experience (Polity Press 2011); Warped Mourning: Stories of the Undead in the Land of the Unburied (Stanford University Press 2013); Roads not Taken.
