Give some time back to your own playing.

When did you last have the chance to really think about how you play?

Many of us spend our playing time concentrating on notes, rehearsals and repertoire. Dynamic Strings Studio is an opportunity to slow things down and focus on you, your instrument and your technique.

Over six weekly 90-minute sessions, we’ll explore the building blocks of confident, expressive violin and viola playing — sound, bow technique, intonation, shifting, vibrato, phrasing and freedom of movement.

We’ll experiment with how small technical changes can make playing feel freer and more comfortable, and how greater physical ease can open up more possibilities in our sound.

Gentle warm-ups, stretching and physical resets will be part of each session, alongside technical exercises and carefully chosen musical extracts so that everything we explore connects back to real music-making.

What we’ll explore

Week 1 — Sound Without Strain
Bow weight, speed and contact point; finding resonance without forcing the sound; noticing unnecessary tension.

Week 2 — Freedom in the Bow
Developing greater freedom through the bow arm and hand, with bow changes, string crossings, articulation and bow distribution.

Week 3 — Intonation & Left-Hand Ease
Hand shape, finger pressure, resonance and practical ways to listen, adjust and play with greater confidence.

Week 4 — Shifting with Confidence
Moving around the instrument with greater freedom, exploring secure shifts, guide fingers and expressive movement.

Week 5 — Vibrato, Colour & Expression
Exploring vibrato alongside bow speed, contact point and articulation to develop a wider palette of sound.

Week 6 — Bringing It All Together
Using repertoire to bring together sound, movement, intonation, phrasing and expression — and noticing what has changed in your playing over the six weeks.

Who is it for?

The course is specifically for adult violin and viola players with some previous playing experience.

You might play regularly in an orchestra or ensemble, have returned to your instrument after a break, or simply feel that your technique hasn’t had much attention for a while.

You don’t need to be an advanced player and there’s no expectation that everything is already working perfectly — that’s rather the point!

The group is limited to 10 players, giving us time to work together while also allowing for individual guidance.

No exams. No being put on the spot. No pressure to prove anything.

Just a friendly, supportive space to ask questions, experiment, develop your playing — and hopefully enjoy your instrument even more.
