Duty Lawyer Training (3 Day)

This training runs over three days, 12th, 18th and 20th November.

You must be able to attend all 3 days.

Day 1 - Nov 12th: Online from 9:30am - 4:30pm

Day 2 - Nov 18th: Online from 9:30am - 1:30pm

Day 3 - Nov 20th: The moot court day will be in person from 9:00am - 5:00pm at a court in Melbourne CBD.

The Safer Families three-day duty lawyer intensive builds the capacity of family violence duty lawyers to provide high quality, trauma informed, effective advice and representation to family violence clients.

Over three days, you will gain in-depth understanding of the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic), build skills in negotiation, advocacy, submissions, and court appearances. This course includes the invaluable experience of applying knowledge and practical skills in action through a simulated court day before a Magistrate.

At the end of the training you will:

• understand how to use the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic) to advise and assist clients.
• explain the family violence intervention order process to clients.
• understand intersectionality and how to work with clients who face additional barriers to justice and how this can affect their experience of the court and legal system.
• identify how the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic) interacts with the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth), provide advice to clients and make submissions to the court regarding these matters.
• apply your gained knowledge and skills to effectively advocate for clients.

Who is this for?

Community legal centre lawyers with less than 2 years experience working as duty lawyers in Family Violence Intervention matters.
