Durufle's sublime setting of the Requiem mass for choir and organ is a masterwork without peer. It is transcendent, hopeful, but also terrifying and heartwrenching. Composed in 1947, it featured Durufle's rich and contemporary approach to harmony, often dense and jarring but always moving and memorable. At the same time, every movement connects back to the earliest music of the Western Art repertoire. Of the work, Durufle said: "this Requiem is entirely composed on the Gregorian themes of the Mass for the Dead. Sometimes the musical text was completely respected, the [organ] part intervening only to support or comment on it; sometimes I was simply inspired by it or left it completely. In general, I have sought above all to enter into the characteristic style of the Gregorian themes.”
The concerts will also feature "The Dark Hills," by composer at BCC singer Paul Deemer.
And, the Pitt-Greensburg Chorale will perform the WORLD PREMIERE of Listen by Tim Takach, written for the Pitt-Greensburg Chorale
