Michigan Flight Museum's WWII Douglas C-47 Skytrain "Hairless Joe" (named after Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole's C-47 Skytrain he piloted in China-Burma Theatre. Cole was the last surviving member of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders and was co-pilot to Jimmy Doolittle).
The WWII Douglas C-47 Skytrain "Hairless Joe" formerly known as "Yankee Doodle Dandy” is owned and operated by the Michigan Flight Museum (formerly Yankee Air Museum (YAM)) and based at the historic Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Don't miss your chance to take an air adventure ride on this award-winning vintage aircraft.
The C-47 aircraft is a commercial Douglas DC-3 converted for military use during WWII that served in a variety of capacities in multiple operations throughout the war and beyond. The C-47 has often been referred by some of its former WWII pilots as the most rugged and reliable aircraft flown during the war. This can be attributed to the fact that its genesis was the Douglas DC-3, which was a commercial, passenger airliner. At that time the design specifications for commercial aircraft were far more rigid than for aircraft built solely for military use.
These hearty aircraft served to transport paratroopers to their destinations and played a vital role in the D-Day invasion at Normandy as well as the Battle of the Bulge. They also were used to transport troops, to tow gliders used for troop insertions behind enemy lines, to evacuate the wounded, and to deliver supplies. After the war, many C-47s were converted back to commercial DC-3 passenger airliners.
C-47 flights will give riders an exciting living history sightseeing experience over some of Port Clinton’s most interesting and familiar areas. After boarding and taxiing, and leveling off at a comfortable 1200’ altitude the C-47 riders will be able to move about the cabin and enjoy all the views.
Quick Tips About Your Flight:
- We ask that you arrive about 1 hour BEFORE your scheduled time and please dress appropriately for the weather. It is about 10-15 degrees cooler in the air than on the ground, however, if the aircraft has been sitting in the sun, the temperature inside can become warm.
-Please bring your ticket with you, either digitally or physically, when you arrive for your Air Adventure, along with a valid ID.
-We do not reserve specific seats for any of our aircraft.
- It is advised that you wear close-toed shoes.
- Ear protection is provided, however, you are more than welcome to bring your own.
- The flight offers ample time to move about the aircraft so each passenger can experience different stations during flight. The exception, of course, is that you cannot sit in the pilot or co-pilot seats, we try to keep them in their own seats.
- All sources of digital media are welcome aboard to capture your incredible experience.
- All passengers are required to sign a Release of Liability upon arrival.
- Be advised that there may be some waiting before you board the aircraft, this is normal to ensure a smooth operation.
- In the event the aircraft cannot fly (i.e. weather, mechanical issues, etc.), we will notify you as soon as possible, either via email, phone or both, to reschedule your Air Adventure.
- Michigan Flight Museum Members must show their valid membership card or welcome email if purchasing on site.
