The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival returns June 12–13. Rug up and gather with friends and whānau for A Rustle in the Night, where First Church glows with lantern light, playful shadows, and friendly nighttime creatures.
From glowing dragons to watchful ruru and ancient tuatara, the night comes alive with curious company. Above, Brophy Aerials glide and twirl through the trees, while below, local dance, live music, and food trucks bring energy and flavour to the evening. Lantern processions weave through the grounds, lighting the way as glowing spaces invite you to explore and discover magic around every corner.
This year the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival will run two timed sessions each night, each lasting 1.5 hours. This gives attendees plenty of time to explore installations, enjoy performances, and experience the full programme without overcrowding.
The same programme will run in both sessions, with outdoor performances complemented by immersive indoor installations and ambient music. Session one runs from 5:30–7:00pm, and session two from 7:30–9:00pm, with a short break in between.
On Saturday 13 June, a low-sensory session will be held from 4:00pm, offering a calmer experience for those sensitive to crowds, noise, or lighting. Sensory ticket holders are welcome to stay past 5:00pm if they wish.
Tickets are available via the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival website. As gate sales are limited, booking in advance is recommended.
Entry to the Carnival will be $5 for children (15 and under), $10 for adults (16+), OR $25 for a family pass (2 adults, 2 children). *All ticket prices will incur a booking fee.
Pay-It-Forward is back this year with a simple new approach. When buying your ticket, you can add a donation - $5, $10, $20, or $50 - that goes directly toward Pay-It-Forward tickets.
If you’re not purchasing tickets but still want to contribute, a separate Pay-It-Forward ticket option is available.
These tickets are distributed through partner agencies to the families they support, helping even more people experience the magic of the Carnival.
