About This Event

Our beach is more than a place to surf and sunbathe. It's a living ecosystem — and it needs us.

Join Santa Monica Helping Hub and The Coastal Alliance for our monthly Dune Walk series, where community members come together to explore, learn, and protect one of Santa Monica's last remaining coastal dune environments. Whether you're a longtime local or new to the Westside, this is your chance to connect with the place you call home on a whole new level.

Your Guide: Ashley Oelsen
Environmental Scientist & Founder, The Coastal Alliance

Ashley will lead you through the dunes and share why this stretch of beach is one of the most ecologically significant ecosystems on the Westside. From threatened shorebird nesting grounds to native coastal plants, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of what we stand to lose — and what we can do to protect it.

Why These Dunes Matter

🐦 Critical nesting habitat for the Western Snowy Plover
🌿 One of Santa Monica's last remaining native dune ecosystems
🌊 A natural buffer protecting our coastline and bay
🔬 A living classroom for coastal science and advocacy

What You'll Do

✅ Guided educational walk through the dunes
✅ Learn about native species, coastal ecology, and local environmental history
✅ Help clean up the beach — gloves, pickers, and bags provided (bring your own garden gloves if you have them, and skip the plastic!)
✅ Connect with neighbors, partners, and fellow coastal advocates
✅ Enjoy snacks and refreshments

Just bring: Water, a hat, and sunscreen. The rest is on us.
