On Saturday 28 September, Dub Me Always is pleased to present the return of the legendary Gladdy Wax, spinning an extended selection of ska, rock steady, roots reggae, and rhythm and blues, original vinyl style, alongside guest selector Haseeb Iqbal of Studio Crumb, and the night’s host, DJ David Katz, plus, at 8:30pm sharp, a book launch for John Masouri’s Pressure Drop: Reggae in the Seventies!Gladdy, aka Mr Vinyl Fingers, is one of the most highly-rated selectors on the circuit, a stylistically superior man whose sound system has long been a highlight of the Notting Hill Carnival. One of the UK’s original sound men, Jamaica-born Gladdy has a very long involvement in the UK reggae scene, presenting radio programmes on BBC Radio London and community station WNK, running the Wax Unlimited record shop in Stoke Newington, and providing London-based promotional assistance for prime releases by artists such as Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Freddy McGregor, and many more. With over six decades of experience playing sound, this year marked Gladdy’s 35th anniversary at Carnival, a testament to his enduring commitment to furthering reggae in all its forms. Which gems will Gladdy pull out of his exclusive musical bag for your listening and dancing pleasure? Once he puts on those white gloves, you know things are going to get serious.
Haseeb Iqbal is a broadcaster, DJ, author and poet from London. The birth of Haseeb Iqbal.World, his latest project, sees the continuation of the weekly radio show he hosted on Worldwide FM until its conclusion in October 2022. He has become one of London’s most esteemed selectors through his monthly 100% vinyl club night Studio Crumb, and in addition to DJ sets at Somerset House and Jumbi Peckham, and special events at Tate Modern, he has graced festival stages in Albania and elsewhere. Known for his eclectic sets, Haseeb’s selection is bound to surprise you.
A comprehensive account of reggae during its golden era, Pressure Drop explores the evolution of the music from the late sixties through the global breakthrough of Bob Marley in the seventies, and the genre’s popularity worldwide. The book draws on original interviews with the scene’s key players of the last 40 years, as well as many of the musicians who were influenced by the reggae from this era. Interview subjects include Burning Spear, Augustus Pablo, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Gregory Isaacs, Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, U Roy and Bunny Wailer. Books will be available to purchase and author John Masouri will be there to sign them, so make sure to arrive by 8:30pm sharp to reserve your copy!
