The DSO's 119th "Spotlight Season" continues with Ciabatti Conducts Beethoven (Wilmington), featuring our second Music Director Finalist Filippo Ciabatti and cellist Tommy Mesa.Ciabatti is joined by Mesa for Shostakovich’s virtuosic "Concerto for Violincello No. 1 in E-flat major." Also on the program is Carlos Simon's 2021 "Fate Now Conquers." Rounding out the concert is Beethoven’s monumental "Symphony No. 5." Concert Run Time: Approx. 85 minutes plus a 20-minute intermission.
Ciabatti says of this program:
"Beethoven and Shostakovich were both obsessed with their own fate and mortality. Beethoven struggled almost all of his life with a hearing problem, which eventually resulted in complete deafness. We know from his letters how devastating that was for him. He contemplated suicide more than once.
Shostakovich lived in Russia during the Communist regime, which was constantly threatening his art and livelihood.
In this program, the three composers — Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Carlos Simon, whose piece is inspired by Beethoven’s struggles — wrote works which alternate between great angst and warm lyricism. Beethoven in particular, despite all his many personal struggles, ends his Fifth Symphony — the most iconic of all time — with a message of hope.
I find that so touching and inspiring. I am so excited to share the great range of emotions this music holds with our audience!
