WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Learn how drumming can reinforce literacy concepts, support auditory discrimination, improve listening, increase music skills, and meet other core content standards based on current research. In this interactive session, participants will play steady beat, rhythms, and the rhythm of words. Participants will contribute to the creation of simple compositions using body percussion, speech, and drums.
PRESENTER BIO
Jennifer Purdy has over 40 years of education experience in her roles as an elementary music teacher, a middle school special education teacher/director, and a private piano teacher. She is currently a program coordinator for the BYU ARTS Partnership program. In 2018 she was awarded Elementary Music Educator of the Year by the Utah Music Educators Association, and in 2014 she was named Salt Lake School District’s Outstanding Arts Educator of the Year. She specializes in arts curriculum development and integration with classroom core subjects. She has instructed pre-service, elementary, and music teachers at Westminster College, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Dixie State, Weber State, and Utah State University. Jen draws on her course certifications in Orff, Kodály, and SongWorks as she teaches workshops around the state on how to utilize music and the arts in elementary school classrooms.
