Driving into History First Mile Celebration
About this Event
After drawing thousands of visitors to the Gilmore Car Museum, Driving into History: Black Women, Cars, and Courage will close its Gilmore run with a community celebration.
Created by the Merze Tate Explorers, a Kalamazoo-based youth media organization, the multimedia exhibition features nearly three dozen historic and reimagined photographs that explore Black women’s history through the lens of cars, travel, courage, mobility, and freedom inspired by the book Picturing Freedom: African Americans and Their Cars by the Burns Archive.
The exhibition will remain on display at the Gilmore Car Museum through Sept. 30, then travel to additional locations across Michigan.
The closing celebration will recognize students, sponsors, community partners, and the upcoming exhibition tour. The public is invited to attend. Space is limited.
