Our first 2025 History Talk meeting will Thursday February 27, at 6:30 PM at Pendley Creek Brewery. Our speaker will be Dr. Andrew Jones of Reinhardt University. Andrew will be speaking on the following: Prior to the infamous Trail of Tears in 1838-39, what is now Pickens County was home to many citizens of the Cherokee Nation. These Native families had an opportunity to file claims against the U.S. Government for the property they were forced to abandon in 1838 - or in some case, property that had been stolen by white citizens of Georgia over many years. In 2022-23, these 1838 claims from the area now including Pickens County were transcribed and digitized by Dr. Andrew Jones and a team of interns at Reinhardt University. Join him as he uncovers our local Native past and considers the importance of remembering the Cherokee people in their own words.
Dr. Andrew Jones is an Assistant Professor of History at Reinhardt University. He completed his Ph.D. in Scotland at the University of Edinburgh in 2018 and has previously taught at Kennesaw State University and Morehouse College. He lives in Marietta with his wife and two children.
