Driftwood Harvest Basket Workshop
There's something quietly profound about building a basket from the outside in — and rib construction basketry is exactly that: a method that asks you to trust the structure before it's visible, to weave into open space and watch form emerge.
In this workshop, you'll work with two materials that couldn't feel more different. A rattan hoop, gives you your framework. A piece of driftwood pulled from the shores of Lake Superior — shaped by cold water and time — becomes the heart of the piece. Together, they make a basket that is part object, part landscape memory.
We'll cover the fundamentals of rib-style construction: forming a hoop, setting, shaping and placing ribs, and building out the weave from both ends toward the center. You'll leave with a finished basket and a technique you can carry into your own material explorations.
All tools and materials are provided, making it ideal for beginners and experienced basket makers alike.
Sample basket is 12” across, 8”deep, and 8” high. Hand dexterity required. Ages 14+.
Weavers of all levels are welcome.
Class is limited in size to 8 participants and will run from 10am-5pm.
