Dreaming in the climate emergency.

The term ‘climate anxiety' has been developed to describe the wide felt feelings of anger, distress, eco- grief, and insecurity towards the future that have become acute in the lives of many. The Dirt is a solo performance that explores how the climate emergency has changed the way we imagine tomorrow. As part of the research of The Dirt, Marianne Tuckman (performer, writer) and Philippa Tuckman (psychotherapist) are opening spaces to reflect, exchange perspectives, and explore these questions with others.

Workshop Structure

The workshops will begin with conversations in which we will exchange perspectives, feelings, thoughts, and experiences surrounding the topic both as a whole group and in smaller groups.

Then we will move into the more creative part.

For a few days before the workshop, we will send a reminder out, asking you to take some more notice of your dreams, perhaps sleeping with a notebook by your bed. Those who feel comfortable doing so will be invited to share a dream with the group. The dreams do not have to be directly linked to the topic of the workshop. The group will then associate to the dream (what images/ thoughts/ memories come to mind), writing these ideas on a huge sheet of paper. There is no correct interpretation or response. Any thought is welcome! Then we will take a step back and look at the pieces of paper, now full of the group's dreams/ associations....

We will reflect on the result and see what poems have appeared.

Social Dreaming

This draws from the 'social dreaming practices ', with the aim of seeing how the question 'is it still OK to have children in the context of climate change?' makes itself present in the thoughts we share.

"Social dreaming follows indigenous practices in recognizing that our dreams may also bear witness to the realities of time and place in which we live, leading to an expanded consciousness of self in relation to others. The purposeful sharing of dreams gives voice to common aspirations and experience, and generates a wealth of thoughts and images for us to work with, in the context which brings us together."

Climate Anxiety

Climate change evokes an infinite variety of variety of feelings, and this workshop is intended to explore creatively some of the words, thoughts, images and dreams that come to us. It will be a space where what we are comfortable sharing can be respectfully witnessed by all participants.

Some feelings aroused by climate change can be deeply distressing and personal, however, and if you are considering exploring those in a therapeutic setting you may want to consider mentioning your climate concerns to any therapist or counsellor you approach.
