We invite anyone who is interested in comics, art, and reading in English to join us for an exciting, queer-centered panel discussion and display of local artists’ comics! In this roundtable, local artists will present their English-language comics and discuss their experiences in the field of English-language publishing for international audiences. They will provide insight into their artistic techniques, integrating queer characters and experiences into their work, and the impact of queer representation in comics today. They will also address the challenges of using online publishing platforms such as Webtoon and Tapas, and how censorship and book bans have played a role in the accessibility of their comics.
After a presentation and discussion, visitors are welcome to ask our panelists questions during a Q&A session as well as mingle with the artists and explore their comics. Please register using the link below!
This event is in cooperation with the CSD Nürnberg, Fliederlich, and Referat Queer Studivertretung FAU.
Niki Smith is the author and artist of the queer Lambda Literary Award-nominated graphic novels The Deep & Dark Blue and Crossplay. Her book The Golden Hour was a Kirkus, SLJ, and NYPL Best Book of 2021. When she’s not drawing comics, she’s collecting embroidery hoops and zines and learning to draw boats. Originally from the US, Niki now lives in Munich, Germany with her wife and two bilingual cats.
Mim (Pushcart) was born in Italy and moved to Germany as a child. After enjoying reading comics from a young age, she was caught up by the storm of manga finally reaching the German public. Drawing herself, she always envisioned being able to publish her own stories, but it wasn’t until she paired up with Bob to form the duo “Pushcart” that the dream would be fulfilled. Pushcart has published their queer Drama/Romance/Slice of Life manga, Remembering Gale, independently since 2015 on the German market and since 2017 online in English for international audiences. The working process between the two is very intertwined; Bob takes care of art, lettering and publishing, while Mim is responsible for the script, layout and screentoning. With around 9 years of experience as a self-publisher, Mim’s heart lies with the independent scene and as such she has gained interesting insights about the chances and struggles of online and print publishing.
DOZERDRAWS is an illustrator, comic artist and bird parent from Germany. He worked on BOOM! Studios’ LUMBERJANES, Jasmine Walls’ THE LAST SESSION, created their own wrestling fan-comic and most recently illustrated Jennie Wood’s coming of age graphic novel PAPER PLANES for MadCave Studios. When not drawing, Damian enjoys rewatching the same movies a dozen times or playing D&D as a swamp goblin named Brald.
