Drawing the Infinite: Islamic Geometry Workshop

Join artist and educator Samira Mian for a hands‑on introduction to Islamic geometric design. Across this two‑hour session, participants will construct a traditional pattern using compass and straightedge before moving into colour.

Samira will guide the process that connects us to humanity throughout time, from the Sumerians, Babylonians and Greeks to the Islamic Golden era to the Geometry & proportions of the Renaissance.

Part 1 – Geometry In the first part of this practical session, participants will learn to construct an Islamic Geometric Pattern - Starting with a plain piece of paper, Samira will guide participants step by step to draw layers of lines and circles using a compass and straightedge. From this underlying grid a pattern will emerge.

Part 2 – Art In the second part, participants outline and bring their constructions to life using colour while Samira provides insight into this fascinating beauty that exists where mathematics meets art, history, and religion.

About Samira Mian

Samira uses her background in Mathematics and Education to share her passion for the heritage of the Islamic lands, particularly the beautiful and rigorous geometric patterns. Using the centuries-old technique of straight edge & compass, she recreates the patterns in contemporary styles and colours. For the past 10 years, Samira has led workshops both in the UK and internationally, reaching a global audience through her YouTube channel and social media. To share this intellectual & beautiful heritage from the Islamic Lands and the immensely satisfying pursuits they involve is a dream come true.
