Meet “The Whirlikid”: Drake Parker
Drake Parker has always had a creative spirit. From growing up winning local art competitions and participating in his school's art program, to his love of Bob Ross and his painting style, creativity has been a constant in his life. His family knows it well, too, from Drake helping Ally and Jared ace their school art projects and building Cub Scout derby cars, to the handmade presents he gives them with so much love and care. Now Drake is onto something new!
In 2025, Drake's admiration for North Carolina folk artist Vollis Simpson was reignited. Inspired by Vollis's gift for transforming repurposed materials into towering, wind-powered sculptures called “Whirlygigs”, Drake set out to build a whirligig of his own, one that honors the late artist, celebrates a few of his favorite things, and recognizes his Boy Scout troop, Troop 9046.
See "The Whirlikid" in motion at the North Carolina Whirligig Festival in downtown Wilson, NC, November 7-8. Stop by on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm to meet Drake and watch his whirligig spin!
