What is "Debtors' Prison"?
Draglore: Debtors' Prison is a more casual busking-style show where Aras Arcadia sings 45 folk songs. There will be three acts of 15 songs with ten minute intermissions in between-- feel free to drop in for just a few songs or stay for the whole time! I will be singing for around three hours. It is free to attend, with donations encouraged to be placed in the basket onstage or sent digitally. However I would be happy even just for the company of an audience. This show is all ages, but rated PG-13.
Why is it called that? No, I am not actually in prison or in any legal trouble, thank goodness. Nor is this meant to be offensive to anyone who is currently or formerly imprisoned. The title of this show is based on the old concept of Debtor's Prisons, where people who were in debt that they couldn't pay were imprisoned until they worked off the debt with manual labor. I am using it as a sort metaphor for my current situation. I work and work and work and I am still in debt.
Currently, I am behind on rent, water bill, electricity bills, internet bill, student loan payments, and my car payments. My car registration is soon to expire in September, and I still have multiple unpaid parking tickets from the last time it expired, which the government has been hounding me about. I have barely managed to stay housed this summer. All of this is not for lack of hard work. I work three jobs in education and childcare. I do whatever odd jobs I can find. I manage the production company Arcadia Arts Co. I volunteer my time to stage manage and do technical work for community theatre. I am currently studying for a master's degree. I am a hard worker, and yet I am still struggling. As a neurodivergent transgender person of color, I am also especially vulnerable in our current society.
This event was created to hopefully help slightly relieve some of the financial burdens that capitalism has decided I must carry. In a world that tells us that our worth is defined by money, I am coming to you with vulnerability by admitting that I am barely scraping by in that regard. While I will likely be able to pay rent this fall, I am very behind on bills in general. At this event I will be singing 45 folk songs (I have never performed that many at one time!) to essentially attempt to "work off" my debt. While I don't think that this single show will fix my financial situation, a little bit of extra help would be really useful in helping me try to catch up without adding too much more to my already very full plate.
I will essentially be busking inside, using printed lyric sheets. Audience members can come and go as they please, and payment can be made to my cashapp/venmo or cash can be put into a basket at the foot of the stage. This event is also pay-what-you-can and so there is no requirement to donate if you are not in a financial place to do so. Even if no one can donate, it would still be nice to see people.
