About this Event

Do you know that racism still exists within LGBTQIA+ communities, even in spaces often perceived as “safe”?

In our recently published report, How Are We Doing in London? - A Report on the Lived Experiences of Chinese LGBTQIA+ Diaspora from Mainland China Vol. 1, 37% of participants reported feeling uncomfortable or overlooked because of their racial and ethnic identities in LGBTQIA+ spaces.

One participant shared:

“After the drag show, the person I was dating (who was White), her friends, and the drag queens all stayed to socialise…... There were hardly any East Asian people there, and I could really feel myself being overlooked during the conversations. On top of that, everyone was speaking English so fast that I couldn't keep up or find a chance to join in. At that moment, I realised that even in a so-called queer safe space, it was still dominated by White people, and ethnic minorities were being marginalised.”

On the final day of our “The Freedom to ____” exhibition, join us for a screening of the documentary Drag Up! 2.0. Through performance-making, the film invites us to explore what it means to de-Westernise and decolonise drag, and how performance can become a way of building community.

Join us to reflect, connect, and imagine how we can build safer queer spaces together.
