As NYCC kicks off Forbidden Planet promises to fill this epic week with in-store events to make you hyped beyond belief. Join us on Thursday October 9th from 6-8PM for a celebration of the recent Dark Horse graphic novel Dr.Werthless. On hand will be Eisner Award winning artist/writer Eric Powell (creator of the legendary The Goon series) and serial killer specialist, true crime author Harold Schechter. It's an honor to have these two signing at the shop as we have been fans of The Goon since day one and we loved their first collaboration "Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?". This time Powell and Schechter focus on the notorious Dr. Fredric Wertham, author of Seduction of the Innocence, the man responsible for self censorship in the comic industry and the creation of the Comics Code. Dr Werthless does not disappoint as both an entertaining and informative nonfiction graphic novel that brings to light Wertham's accomplishments beyond the neutering of comics that might just have you second guessing your stance on him.
More about Dr Werthless:
He Studied Murder And Nearly Killed the Comics Industry!
From the team behind the award-winning “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?” comes a nonfiction graphic novel examining Dr. Fredric Wertham, one of the most polarizing figures in pop culture history.
Wertham wrote Seduction of the Innocent (1954), asserting that comic books were a cause of juvenile delinquency. His testimony before Congress about the supposed dangers of comics helped lead to the creation of the Comics Code Authority, and to Wertham being reviled by comic book fans as a witch-hunting zealot who stirred up a panic among parents for his own self-promoting purposes.
Wertham was also a renowned psychiatrist who, among other accomplishments, opened a clinic in Harlem for disadvantaged African-American patients and played an important role in the desegregation of the nation's schools.
Believing that murder could be abolished through a proper understanding of the mental and social roots of criminal violence, he took a genuinely humane approach to some of the most notorious homicidal maniacs of his time, while simultaneously exploiting their stories for his own commercial ends.
Acclaimed true crime author, Harold Schechter, and multiple Eisner award-winning cartoonist, Eric Powell, present a graphic novel that takes an unbiased look at this flawed and complex man, whose obsessive dream of freeing the world from violence nearly murdered the comics industry.
More about Eric Powell:
Powell is an Eisner, Ringo, National Cartoonist Society, International Horror Guild, and Inkpot award-winning cartoonist. While he has worked for every prominent American comics publisher on titles such as Superman: Escape From Bizarro World, Big Trouble in Little China, Marvel Monsters, Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters,The Simpsons, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, The Hood, MAD magazine, Devil Dinosaur, and Swamp Thing, the majority of his career has been focused on creator owned comics. Most notably his series The Goon and his work through his own imprint, Albatross Funny Books. Recently he has collaborated on the graphic novels “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?” And “Dr. Werthless” with prominent true crime author Harold Schechter.
More about Harold Schechter:
Schechter is Professor Emeritus at Queens College, the City University of New York, where he taught American literature for forty-two years. His essays on crime, psychopathology and media violence have appeared in many newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and the International Herald Tribune. He has written for network television (Law & Order) and been featured as an expert on PBS’ History Detectives, as well as various shows on cable channels, including Investigation Discovery, A & E Biography, and Court TV. Among his more than forty published books are a series of historical true-crime narratives about America’s most infamous serial killers, several encyclopedic works (The A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers, The Serial Killers Files, Psycho USA: Famous American Killers You Never Heard Of), and an anthology of American true crime writing published by the Library of America.
