"American Sketches: Tales of a Continent" celebrates the rich musical landscapes of North, Central, and South America. Pianists Gabriela Calderón Cornejo (CSMA faculty) and Astrid Morales Torres present a vibrant program that brings together a diverse range of voices, styles, and cultural influences from across the continent. Through these works for piano four hands, the program explores both well known and lesser heard repertoire by living composers, with one historical voice offering a point of reflection. Audiences are invited on a dynamic journey through the Americas, discovering music that is colorful, expressive, and deeply rooted in heritage and identity.
About the Artists
Costa Rican pianist Dr. Gabriela Calderón Cornejo is a multifaceted musician whose creative voice and wide-ranging artistry encompass solo performance, chamber musician, collaborative piano, adjudication, and teaching. She has cultivated her career through projects and organizations across Costa Rica, the United States, and Europe, including work with wind ensembles, choirs and orchestras, as well as world premiers, recording collaborations, and interdisciplinary projects with theater, visual arts, and dance.
Astrid Morales Torres is an internationally recognized Mexican pianist whose extraordinary performances have been appreciated by audiences around the world, including the United States, Europe, Mexico and Latin America. As a passionate piano pedagogue, she serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at The University of Texas at Arlington.
