State/National UCH Legislation, UNESCO 2001 Convention, happenings with ICOMOS-ICUCH
The protection of underwater cultural heritage is governed by national legislation. These frameworks target shipwrecks and submerged artifacts against looting, climate change, and pollution.
Many countries enforce dedicated maritime heritage acts (such as Australia's Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018) to automatically protect shipwrecks and sunken artifacts older than 100 years within their territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.
National laws align with international definitions to criminalize unauthorized commercial exploitation, looting, and unscientific disturbance of submerged sites.
UNESCO 2001 Convention Core Definition - Applies to all traces of human existence having a cultural, historical, or archaeological character that have been underwater—partially or totally—for at least 100 years. This year marks the conventions’ 25th Anniversary.

About Dr Corioli Souter
Corioli is a curator, archaeologist, and Head of the Department of Maritime Heritage. She has been a practicing archaeologist since 1992 undertaking archaeological fieldwork, research, exhibition development, film documentaries and capacity building and teaching in Australia and abroad.
She is committed to making Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) and its related museum collections accessible to all researchers and the public and endeavours to incorporate critical approaches to maritime archaeology and collection interpretation with consideration of current issues—such as environmental sustainability—while maintaining ethical and inclusive best practice.
She is a member of ICOMOS International Committee in the Underwater Heritage (ICUCH).
