On August 2, 1943, prisoners at the Nazi extermination camp Treblinka II launched an uprising, freeing—at least temporarily—as many as 300 Jewish slave laborers. This revolt and the many earlier acts of defiance that made it possible are among the most awe-inspiring episodes of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. Using the testimonies of revolt survivors, prior escapees, and even those of former SS guards, we can now shed new light on this history and the people who took part, foregrounding the actions of women prisoners for the first time and revealing their central place in this story after years of silence.
These events are sponsored by the FHSU Department of History and Philosophy, Office of the Provost, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Dr. Leo Oliva Professorship, Phi Alpha Theta, Tebo Library, American Democracy Project, and Hays Public Library.
