What should Downtown Urbandale look and feel like in the years ahead? The City of Urbandale is considering updates to the zoning rules for the downtown area. Zoning is essentially the community’s rulebook for what can be built where—including where housing, restaurants, shops, offices, entertainment, and public spaces may be located.
These updates are not about approving one specific building or development. They would establish the rules that guide future investment and help new projects fit the community’s vision for a more vibrant, walkable downtown.
The proposed updates would:
• Create a new Downtown District that allows a mix of restaurants, shops, offices, housing, entertainment, public spaces, and other destinations.
• Make it easier to reuse and update existing buildings as community needs change.
• Create a Residential Transition District with additional housing options and a thoughtful transition between downtown activity and nearby neighborhoods.
• Put the community vision established through Forward Urbandale and the Downtown Master Plan into action.
Stop by anytime between 5:30 and 7:00 PM to review the concepts, participate in interactive activities, ask questions, and share your feedback. A brief presentation will begin at 5:30 PM, but you do not need to attend the presentation to participate.
