Douglas Lawson Creek Community Volunteers Restoration Day

Join us for cemetery restoration at the historic Douglas Island Lawson Creek Cemeteries on Saturday, June 27, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
This restoration effort is led by RavensBones.com in partnership with the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 2 Juneau. Our volunteer group has been restoring and caring for this area since 2021, and this is now our fifth year of restoration work.
As we prepare for the Fourth of July holiday, we invite community members to help us care for these historic resting places and improve access throughout the cemetery grounds.
Volunteers will be helping with W**d whacking, cutting back overgrowth, removing downed branches, gathering brush and debris into piles for removal, and improving access to historic grave sites throughout the cemetery grounds. This work helps uncover markers hidden by vegetation, preserves access to resting places, and honors those who came before us.
During this effort, we would also like volunteers to help document graves by taking photographs and uploading them to the Find a Grave website. This helps preserve historical records, assists families and researchers, and ensures that those resting here are remembered for generations to come. 🙏🏽🪦🙏🏽
We are also seeking donations of small American flags to place throughout the cemetery in advance of the Fourth of July holiday. There are approximately 500 resting places within the Douglas Island Lawson Creek Cemeteries, and donations of any quantity would be greatly appreciated. As with our restoration efforts, the flags will first be placed within the Native section of the cemetery, where we always begin our work.
We ask people to park as close to the retaining wall as possible to help keep traffic moving safely. Please dress for the weather and bring water and a snack for yourself.
A limited supply of tools will be provided. We especially encourage people to bring W**d whackers if they have them available. Rakes, loppers, and other garden tools are also greatly appreciated. Most importantly, bring good energy.
We welcome individuals, families, youth groups, church groups, and anyone interested in helping care for these historic resting places.
