Guitarist Doug de Vries & vocalist Diana Clark perform beautiful bossa nova tracks from their stunning Three Shadows of Blue album live at The Count’s.

Guitarist Doug de Vries and vocalist Diana Clark present a refreshing new take on bossa nova performing classic songs from Milton Nascimento Baden Powell Noel Rosa and Tom Jobim. Their duo CD Three Shadows of Blue interprets Jobim and other pioneers of bossa nova with just voice and guitar delving into the essence of this subtle yet rich repertoire. Awarded Arts Critics’ Top Ten Albums of 2005 (Cadence Magazine USA) the album is a much-loved Australian bossa-nova classic.

Doug de Vries is one of Australia's foremost guitarists and a significant composer for the guitar excelling in many musical genres from jazz and blues to tango gypsy swing choro samba and bossa nova. He is considered Australia's leading exponent of Brazilian guitar repertoire and released a solo album of original works and classic Brazilian repertoire DdV Solo.

Emerging into Australian consciousness through his long stint as resident guitarist in the house band on Channel Seven’s Steve Vizard’s Tonight Live de Vries was also a founding member of the Vince Jones group over 10 years in which the jazz singer built his loyal following and made his seminal recordings. De Vries maintained an interest in Brazilian guitar music throughout all those years releasing his own compositions and albums inspired by this rich musical fount. After living in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 and making subsequent trips partly encouraged by receipt of an Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship his performance credits in the world of Brazilian music are exemplary having performed and recorded with Yamandu Costa Hermeto Pascoal Mauricio Carrilho Luciana Rabello Jorginho do Pandeiro Ronaldo do Bandolim Paulo Aragao Proveta and Lula Galvao.

De Vries has also toured and recorded with major Australian artists such as Don Burrows Kate Ceberano Anthony Warlow James Morrison Paul Grabowsky Vince Jones Eddie Perfect Judy Jacques and Diana Clark as well as Barbara Morrison Laylah Hathaway and Andy Bey from the United States.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Diana May Clark established her interpretive credentials by way of award-winning Brazilian jazz recordings and collaborations with virtuoso guitarist/composer (now husband) Doug de Vries. She has a background in a cappella and choral music – being a founding member of international award-winning original vocal group Akasa Clark also established Australia’s first purely Brazilian-repertoire choir Borboleta and was an artistic director/conductor of the 400-voice Boite’s Melbourne Millennium Chorus.

“Diana’s mellifluous voice perfectly complements de Vries’ virtuosity on the 7 string guitar. Marrying old and new sounds they manage to remain faithful to the ‘musica brasileira’ genre while retaining a strong Australian sensibility.” – The Age

“De Vries and Clark feel the music of Brazil down to their bones. His guitar is full of romance and her voice is so intimate it could make you blush. Australia may be halfway around the world from Brazil but you’d never know it from listening to their CDs.” – Cadence Magazine USA
