There are a few changes, so please read carefully.

Dope Slam Rules

1. All poems performed in the competition must be the original work of the performing poet. Poets can sample up to twenty (20) seconds of work from another artist.

2. There are no props, musical accompaniment, or costumes allowed during poetry performances.

3. During preliminary rounds, no poems may be performed more than once. A poem may be performed in Finals even if it was used in a preliminary round.

4. Time Limit: Poets have a 3-minute time limit with a 10-second grace period for ALL rounds. After 3:10 a poet’s score is penalized .5 points for every 10 seconds over the time limit.

5. Rounds 1 and 3 will have a theme that each poet must stick to.

A perfect score will be 15 points, assuming a poet scores 5 points from each judge.

Each poet will be in both rounds 1 & 2.

Only the 3 poets that score the highest with combined totals from rounds 1 & 2 will advance to round 3.

If by any chance there is a tie between 2 or more poets there will be a 30-second cipher and the winner will advance to the next round.

Round 2 - Poet's Choice - 3 minutes

Round 3 - Legalizing Marijuana (what’s your take) - 3 minutes
