Please join us for a special evening with Meg Stone, Margaret Grace Myers, and Clara Porter, who will be discussing Meg's book Don't Fight Back: And 10 Other Myths about Crime, Personal Safety, and Gender-Based Violence!
From a nationally recognized violence-prevention expert, an accessible guide that debunks the most pervasive myths about crime and offers evidence-based strategies that make us safer
A specific image of violence and how to avoid it lives in a lot of our imaginations. And what some of us fear most is shaped not by the strongest evidence, but the most viral horror stories.
Meg Stone, an abuse and violence prevention expert, dives deep into dangerous safety myths and helps us understand what the evidence shows and what men in positions of authority just expect us to believe because they said so.
Meg Stone is the executive director of IMPACT Boston, an abuse-prevention and empowerment self-defense organization. Her writing has been published in Huffington Post, Newsweek, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Dame, and Ms.
Margaret Grace Myers is a writer, an educator, and a book collector based in Maine. Her writing has appeared in The Cut, Lady Science, and the Gotham Gazette, among other publications. She holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from Goucher College and a master’s degree in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School.
Clara Porter is the founder of Prevention. Action. Change. (PAC) based here in Portland. PAC is well known for their work in empowerment self-defense, de-escalation, peacekeeping, and more recently in ICE response and resistance. Clara has more than 30 years of experience in the field of violence prevention with a focus on survivors on violence. Clara and her family moved to Portland in 1999. She feels deeply rooted in this community, collaborating frequently with local organizations, and working to make our city safe and welcoming for all.
