DON HERTZFELDT is a is an American animator, writer, and independent filmmaker. He is a two-time Academy Award nominee who is best known for the animated films , the series, , and . In 2014, his work appeared on . Nine of his short films have competed at the Sundance Film Festival, a festival record. He is also the only filmmaker to have won the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize for Short Film twice.

Hertzfeldt's work has been described as "some of the most influential animation ever created", "some of the most vital and expressive animation of the millennium", "some of the most essential short films of the last 20 years", and "films of a sort that never really existed before." In 2020, described his work as "simultaneously tragic and hilarious and philosophical and crude and deeply sad and fatalist and yet stubbornly, resolutely hopeful."

Hertzfeldt's It's Such a Beautiful Day and World of Tomorrow have been regarded by critics as two of the best animated films of all time.

In his book The World History of Animation, author Stephen Cavalier writes "Hertzfeldt is either a unique phenomenon or perhaps an example of a new way forward for individual animators surviving independently on their own terms... he attracts the kind of fanatical support from the student and alternative crowds usually associated with indie rock bands".

Hertzfeldt's latest short film, , was released in 2024.

His next animated film, Paper Trail, will premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

In 2025, Hertzfeldt created and curated ANIMATION MIXTAPE, a new anthology of international animated short films. Unlike past animation festivals, Mixtape is designed to only screen in theaters, with all of the net box office earnings to be paid to the animators in the program.

ANIMATION MIXTAPE is an 85-minute short film program personally selected by Hertzfeldt.

WHAT TIME DOES THE MOVIE START?

DON HERTZFELDT'S ANIMATION MIXTAPE starts on Sunday, January 25, 2026 at 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 9:00 pm; and on Monday, January 26, 2026 at 11:30 am.

WHAT TIME CAN I ARRIVE?

Attendees will be allowed to enter the auditorium up to 30 minutes prior to show time.

WHERE DO I PARK?

Free parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the Gardena Cinema on the north side.

WHERE IS GARDENA CINEMA?

HOW DO I REDEEM MY TICKET?

Upon purchase, ticket will be emailed to you as a PDF attachment from Eventbrite. When you arrive to the event, please show the entrance attendant the bar code on your ticket at the entrance to the cinema, either by holding up your printed version, or by displaying it on your phone or smart device. Attendant will scan it to check you in, and you'll be good to go into the auditorium!

CAN I BRING FOOD / SNACKS?

NO! This is an indoor screening. Please do not bring outside food or drinks inside the cinema. Tasty refreshments and fresh popped popcorn will be sold at the cinema snack bar.

WILL YOU HAVE RESTROOMS?

YES! Gardena Cinema's lobby, snack bar, and restrooms will be open.

MAY I BRING MY PET WITH ME?

Sorry, PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED INSIDE THE ACTUAL CINEMA BUILDING, (where restrooms and snack bar are located).
