Join Death Penalty Alternatives for Arizona (DPAA) and Arizonans for Effective Public Safety (AEPS) for a special community screening of The Window on Death Row in Mesa on World Day Against the Death Penalty.

The Window on Death Row tells the story of Joaquín José Martínez, who was sentenced to death for a double M**der in Florida at age 24. After spending more than five years incarcerated, including three years on death row, he was ultimately exonerated.

Before his arrest, Joaquín supported the death penalty. His experience fundamentally changed how he understood capital punishment, the criminal legal system, and justice.

Through his story, the film invites us to consider difficult questions about wrongful convictions, punishment, accountability, trauma, forgiveness, victims and their families, and what justice can, and should, look like.

Following the screening, attendees are invited to stay for a community conversation and Q&A exploring the film, Arizona’s death penalty, wrongful convictions, and the experiences of people directly impacted by these systems.

You do not need to come with a particular position on the death penalty. Come with your questions, your experiences, and a willingness to engage in thoughtful conversation.
