Docomomo US/Hawaii is pleased to announce our 2026 Annual Membership Meeting. This gathering offers a unique opportunity to experience a significant example of local postmodern architecture, designed by architect Glenn Miura in 1987.
The Corporate Plaza and its companion, the Hawaii Kai Executive Plaza, built three years later, with their clay tile, double pitched hipped roofs, courtyards, and arcades, as well as lanai/walkways accessing the office spaces, were early explorations into a return to regional idioms in Hawaii. Reviving the architectural vocabulary developed during the 1930s Territorial period, this modern traditionalist form became the predominant expression of regionalism in Hawaii during the 1990s. The style was used in the designs of resort hotels, corporate headquarters, banks, Kapolei, and numerous residential situations, and over the course of the decade emerged as the primary architectural means to convey a sensitivity to Hawaii’s climate and culture.
The Corporate Plaza is a notable fixture in Hawaii Kai’s built environment, reflecting the stylistic transitions of the late 1980s. Miura’s design is characterized by its geometric precision and its integration into the coastal landscape, serving as a compelling case study for our chapter’s mission to document and conserve the Modern Movement in the islands.
Our event will include:
- Our annual membership meeting, where we go over this past year's events, reports and elect new members to the board.
- A brief presentation by design architect, Glenn Miura, on the architectural history and regional significance of the 1987 design.
- A guided walkthrough of the plaza’s public spaces and key design features.
- An opportunity to connect with fellow members and professionals dedicated to architectural preservation.
Parking is free and located onsite.
