About this Event
This workshop is designed to introduce the participant to the basic principles of optics and microscopy in a practical, hands-on manner. In a number of experiments, participants will sequentially build the different components of a simple compound microscope, with the aim of gaining a thorough understanding of basic concepts such as image formation, magnification, conjugate planes, image planes, aperture planes and infinity-conjugated optical systems. Finally, through the addition of an epi-fluorescence module, participants will be familiarized with the basic concepts important in fluorescence imaging, such as fluorophore spectral properties, chromatic filtering, and multi-channel imaging.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to use their freshly built microscope to capture and take home their own images from a variety of samples.
This is a full day hands-on workshop, with brief theory snippets throughout. The entire workshop will take place at the D-BSSE in room D65.2, registration is required and spots are limited.
