DIY Bee Nest Box Workshop

Learn about cavity-nesting solitary bees, and make your very own no-drill DIY bee nest box to support solitary bees. (Family friendly!)

Join for this educational bee workshop as part of our "Bloom & Buzz" project in partnership with The Helping Hand! Suitable for kids aged 8 and above. (Closing date: Tue 1 Sep, 11 PM)

Come observe wild bees in the Bloom & Buzz garden, and create your very own easy DIY bee nest box made of bamboo and wheat straws to support our wild solitary bees.
Why make bee homes?
With urbanisation and habitat loss, there may be limited nesting sites for solitary cavity-nesting bees. The hollow tubes of our bamboo bee houses can help provide female solitary bees of the Megachile genus a sheltered place to nest in. They will be able to construct their nests, store pollen mixed with nectar in each brood cell, lay a single egg, create a partition, and repeat the process.
Artificial bee homes are also a great way to observe and monitor solitary bees in your area. The one you will get to bring home is 20cm long x 8cm in diameter.
You can expect cavity-nesting bees such as the Broadheaded Leafcutter Bee (Megachile laticeps) and Shadow-winged Resin Bee (Megachile umbripennis), as well as solitary wasps which also play an important role in garden ecosytems.

Learn what our wild native bees need, what makes a commercially sold "bee hotel" a good or badly designed one, and how to maintain your bee nest box after you install it.

Where to put up the bee homes:

• in a sunny but sheltered area facing south or southeast
• within a garden that has pollinator plants
• at your own community garden plot
• school yard or privately managed site (eg. church, mosque, temple, etc) with a garden or is next to a garden or park. Ask for permission!

Refreshments by The Helping Hand's Hands Cafe
After the workshop, we'll be having refreshments at Hands Cafe to support them! Prepare $5 (paynow) to purchase a cup of local coffee and a special treat lovingly made by the residents of the bakery team.
You can also shop online for their classics such as pandan chiffon cake, almond croissants and lemon tarts. Order 3 days in advance and collect them when you visit!

Date and Privacy Protection of Client / Partnering Organisation:

I agree to treat all personal information of the residents of The Helping Hand as confidential (including pictures and videos of clients or events, etc.) and will not collect, use or disclose such information without the permission of A Rocha Singapore.
