Title: Mary, the New Eve in Patristic Thought
“Ave Eva”, this palindrome which, for instance, can be found in a poem by Peter Damiani (11th cent.), expresses in the most concise form possible the Christian theology that Mary’s sinlessness and obedience reverses the disobedience and original sin of Eve. This idea has been present in Christian faith and theology right from the beginning: Christ, the saviour, is the new Adam, Mary, his mother, the new Eve, and both together reverse the human fate from the expulsion of humanity from paradise to its re-opening and the re-admission of all believers: “paradies lost – paradise regained” (John Milton). The talk will highlight some essential points made by early Christian theologians in order to show their timeless meaning and impact.
