Speaker: Jeremy BorrelliDescription: This summer, news of multiple shipwrecks discovered at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson Historic Site spread globally. One of these wrecks might be the final remains of the infamous Spanish privateer vessel, La Fortuna, that exploded during an attack on colonial Brunswick Town in September 1748. This talk will discuss the research and fieldwork leading up to these discoveries as part of the broader Brunswick Town Colonial Waterfront Project, which is led by ECU Maritime Studies in collaboration with the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The history of La Fortuna will be outlined as well as how archaeologists located and recovered what may be 40-feet of the ship’s hull. Participants will learn about the varied archaeological sites that make up the historic waterfront as well as the interdisciplinary science that informs why these sites are now coming to the surface. After 300 years, the historic port’s waterfront is emerging from the muddy riverbank and unveiling new insights into the maritime history of the Tar Heel State.
