Registered voters from the RSU 1 towns gather to vote on the budget that was adopted by the Board of Directors. The budget is presented by articles that are voted upon. This is a town-meeting-style proceeding – you can speak, make motions and vote. The amount in each article can be amended up or down by the voters present.What Voters can – and cannot – do at the Annual Budget Meeting
Voters can:
• Ask questions before voting on any article.
• Make a motion to amend the proposed amount in any article before the vote is taken.
• Vote to approve or amend the budget article by article.
Voters cannot:
• Direct the district to add or eliminate specific positions, programs, or supplies – decisions about how money is spent within each article are decisions made by the Board of Directors and Superintendent.
• Require specific purchases or expenditures to be made or avoided.
• Vote on individual line items within an article – only the total for each article is voted on.
• Bind the Board of Directors to spend money in a specific way within an approved article.
