This 8-hour course is designed for current supervisors or those who are transitioning into a supervisor position such as shift supervisors, center managers, or 9-1-1 Directors. The workshop format will consist of lecture combined with student interactive discussions and exercises focusing on skills and tools for employee development. Attendees will share, learn, and take-home valuable tools in the following courses:
Liability for Supervisors – 1 Hour Legal Studies
By its nature, supervision and management duties beg for exposure to liability. One of the most important liability exposure is that of vicarious liability, making the supervisors and managers responsible for the actions of those in their charge. There are other areas of supervision and management that can be called to question in a liability action, such as liability incurred when decisions are made. Like supervisors, managers carry a good bit of liability. They are responsible for decision making, the work environment, the operational procedures and policies, and everything that goes on in a center. Managers are almost always named in lawsuits because of this global responsibility. In this workshop we will review the basics and hunt for the possible exposures within our own centers.
Problem Solving for Supervisors – 1 Hour Interpersonal Perspectives
To understand problem solving, you first must understand problems, how they get started, and how they came to your attention. Finding the origin of any problem makes it easier to decide the best course of action. In this workshop, we will look at the problems we face daily and see how it starts, which will prepare us to properly solve it.
Proactive Leadership Strategies – 1 Hour Interpersonal Perspectives
Leaders want to generate commitment to most people they supervise. Good leaders lead by example – professionally and personally. They also discipline themselves to demonstrate recognized leadership behavior in dealing with others and tend to be well respected among team and peers. According to analysis, leaders who follow these strategies make up only about 10 percent or less of managers within law enforcement culture. During this workshop we’ll look at some best practices and discuss successes in your center.
Counseling Skills for Supervisors – 2 Hours Interpersonal Perspectives
A communications center supervisor must counsel employees about aspects of performance and behavior. By understanding aspects of the counseling process, the supervisor can turn even unpleasant counseling sessions into positive motivational sessions. During this session we will workshop the job functions of supervisors and managers and counseling techniques. You’ll participate in a role playing exercise as we attempt to put these recommendations into practice.
You 2.0 – Personal Development – 2 Hours Interpersonal Perspectives
Ever wonder how you can improve yourself as a supervisor? This course focuses on personal development to become the leader you want to be. Attendees will be given the opportunity to learn how personal development relates to professional development and how to create a personal development plan for themselves and their team members. We will also workshop about how to improve knowledge and skills to be a better you.
