About the talk . . .
The photographic image is both a form of fiction and a reference to the real. While visiting Vallauris, France, making photographs, I was inspired by the picturesque landscape and the warm Mediterranean Sea, as well as the experience of travel and the emotional displacement of finding myself as a foreigner far from home. As I moved through the world, breathing, walking, seeing, I find both familiar and strange feelings in each day. I created order and found comfort through my camera and the act of photography in depicting the complexity of these moments. Later in the studio, I projected the images onto ceramic forms that resemble waves, forms made by gently folding clay into abstract shapes. I recapture the moments, mediated and distorted by the process, like the new memories forming in my mind. They are recognizable, strange, and misleading. The camera mediates my every experience.
About the speaker . . .
Susan Moore found her way into photography with the gift of her first camera from her father. The camera was a tool for her to organize her thoughts and ideas and a ticket to events and places she could not access without it. These early experiences fostered a love of art and education. As a professor, Susan believes that students who study art at the undergraduate level find successful creative careers. She believes that studio art is an integral component of a liberal arts degree program and a strong foundation for success. She is dedicated to academic success through quality high-impact practices in teaching and learning. Susan is a photographer and teacher with a BA degree in art from Columbia College in Chicago, an MA degree in art education from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, and an MFA in photography from Washington University in St. Louis.
