Course description
Trees are an integral part of the natural world and our well-being. As part of the Trees for Climate Action project, join fellow Glasgow residents on a free half-day course that will help you to connect with nature and improve your tree knowledge and skills.
This introductory course will start by looking at what exactly makes a tree, a tree. You will be introduced to tree biology and ecology, and the important roles that trees play in the environment, including mitigating climate change. You will also build the skills necessary to recognise trees that are common in your local area and learn interesting facts about what shaped Bradford’s landscape to look the way it does today.
By the end of the course, you will:
- Understand how trees fit into the plant kingdom, the key differences between broadleaf and conifer trees, and the basic structure of a tree
- Understand what shaped your local landscape to look the way it does today
- Understand the basics of tree photosynthesis, life cycles, habitats, niches, and ecosystem services they provide, including mitigating climate change
- Recognise by key characteristics some of the most common trees that can be found in your area
- Understand how to begin pursuing related voluntary roles in your city
- Share this knowledge with friends, family and fellow volunteers
What will I get out of attending?
You will learn how to identify, record, care for, and engage with your local trees, as well as discover related volunteer and career opportunities with the support of your tutor. You don’t need any previous experience, just a willingness to explore and learn! You will also receive a free tree guide and a certificate of attendance after your course.
