Join Dr. Debby for a fascinating, interactive introduction to the Chol Q’ij, the sacred 260-day Maya calendar still maintained within living Maya tradition. Sometimes compared with astrology because it associates particular energies and qualities with the day of our birth, the Chol Q’ij is actually its own ancient calendrical tradition. It combines 20 sacred day signs, called Nawales, with 13 numerical energies, creating 260 unique sacred-day combinations.

Before the workshop, provide your birth date so we can discover the number and Nawal associated with the day you were born. You’ll learn the traditional symbolism, qualities, strengths and challenges connected with your particular Nawal and explore what resonates with the person you know yourself to be. You’ll also learn the beautifully simple Maya numerical system of dots and bars and see how the repeating cycles of 13 numbers and 20 Nawales work together to create the 260-day sacred calendar.

Then we’ll go beyond your Birth Nawal and explore the Energy Cross of the Nawales presented in the Guatemalan Choltun tradition used for this workshop. Your Birth Nawal forms the heart of the Cross, accompanied by four additional Nawales representing different supporting aspects of your personal sacred-calendar pattern. Together, we’ll create your individual Energy Cross and explore the traditional qualities associated with each of its five positions.

This is not fortune-telling or a prediction of your future, and a Nawal is not simply the Maya equivalent of Aries, Taurus or Gemini. Instead, we’ll approach this living Indigenous tradition with curiosity and respect, using it as an opportunity for self-discovery and reflection. What sounds remarkably like you? What surprises you?
