A beginner-friendly session on disability politics, disability justice, and practical ways to create meaningful access.
About this Event

Are you interested in learning more about disability politics and the experiences of disabled people, but don't know where to start? Would you like practical ideas for incorporating meaningful access into your work, artistic practice, or everyday life? If so, we have just the session for you.

This Disability Awareness session is run by Sheffield based queer disabled led organisation Quiplash CIC.

They'll provide an introduction and overview to disability awareness, covering things like:

  • What even is disability? (models of disability)
  • Principles of disability justice as laid out by powerhouse organisers Patty Berne, Mia Mingus, and Stacey Milbern.
  • Good practice around language, including what not to say.
  • What is access? Different styles and types of access.
  • How to provide access: building solutions, human solutions, tech solutions and beyond.

This session will run twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon - please pick the time that best suits you!

Venue accessability: Site Gallery, Studio II. You can access Studio II via a staircase or a lift, there is wheelchair access, and accessible toilets on the same floor.
