Dip After Dark! Documenting Extreme High Tides with Two Maine Mermaids

About this Event

This collaboration pairs the Two Maine Mermaids’ passion for coldwater dips with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s Coastal Flooding Community Science project, offering an opportunity to discuss, witness, document, and then take a plunge into the Maine coast’s rising tides.

As sea levels rise, coastal flooding from extreme high tides and storms is an increasing threat to Maine’s 5,000 miles of tidal coastline. Our highest tides now flood low-lying areas along Maine’s coast, and damage from storm surge is compounded by higher baseline sea levels. Through GMRI’s Coastal Flooding Community Science project, people across the state can investigate and document high water events to help their communities understand, anticipate, and plan for future sea levels.

This spring, all of the highest projected tides occur late at night, making it harder to capture these potential flood events and their local impacts. On July 13, we’ll venture out at dark to witness one of the highest tides of the month and take an (optional) dip in the rising waters at Willard Beach.

Here’s what to expect:

9pm: Gather at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to share snacks and stories of coastal change, learn about sea level rise and how communities are adapting, and get introduced to the community science project.

10pm: Head to Willard Beach with us to catch the high tide, where we’ll outline and document the water’s extent together.

10:48pm: Mark the moment of high tide, and take a plunge (or support from shore if you prefer)!

Come prepared with your swimsuit, warm layers, a towel or two, and a flashlight! Look for our full dip packing list in your confirmation email.

Parking will be available at the lot adjacent to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for the first portion of the evening, and at the 33 Willow Street lot in South Portland for the second portion at Willard Beach.

Please note that participation is at your own risk; lifeguards will not be on duty.

Registration for this event is required, and will open in mid-June.
